hey guys m planning to buy a pet doberman m 21yrs old..........i think its safe for me to buy a dog like doberman. doberman's strength n agility has impressed me a lot....and as for their protectiveness i feel a dog had to b protective towards his master or family right and more over he's a big dog n has to behave like this.one more thing m always with a friends or another do u think even if accidently or playishly my friends punche me or playes rough with me when my dog is around...!!!my dog will attack them n i wont b able to controll him??????
Dobermans are big, smart dogs. But you have to remember that they don't magically do what is right -- you have to train them.
I think your concerns are valid. Someone in my family adopted an adult standard poodle. She was very protective of their kids -- to the point of getting between them and their father if he tried to roughhouse (play) or spoke harshly (not play). The dog really didn't understand the difference.
Before you get a dog, ask yourself if you really have the time to devote to training. I have a 6 month old puppy now, and I'm beat. And I have a spouse to share duties.
I volunteer at the humane society and it breaks my heart to see how many puppies/ dogs are adopted and returned a month or two later. It seems that we all need to realize that raising a puppy/ having a dog of any sort is like adding a child to your family. They not only take time to be trained but take time to be properly cared for and loved. I am around your age at 22 years old and while I would absolutely love to have a dog I realize that I couldn't devote the necessary time/ effort into giving the dog everything he/she deserves.
There have been dobermans at the shelter and they seem to be extremely high energy and most have problems being dominate with their food (not saying that that is breed specific). Something to keep in mind when looking into them.
