I just read a post here about a puppy passing away from this. My sister's (AlexNKai) puppy had both. Thankfully Kai got better. I'm just wondering if they go hand in hand so to speak. Or is this just a coincidence? I had a Pom with Coccida but she never had Pneumonia. My vet said it's very hard to get rid of and it's common in kennels etc. Anyone else have any experience with it?
They don't go hand in hand I'd say personally. Coccidia is a single celled organism that infects the intestines. It lives in the dirt, 75% of adult dogs have coccidia in their intestines, however most dogs have an immune system that is sufficent to prevent any adverse effects. Pneumonia in dogs probably starts out as kennel cough, which is an upper respiratory infection, kind of like a cold. It's basically a viral disease that infects the lungs. The only reason I'd think these two *might* ggo hand in hand is both are very likely to occur in unclean conditions like you'd find in a poorly kept kennel. If the dog's immune system isn't sufficiently strong enough (like in puppies especialy, which have far weaker immune systems than adult dogs), both of these could easily find a foothold.
Thanks for the info! That makes a lot of sense now. Is this usually found in boarding facilities as well? Both my dogs have had all their vaccines including the kennel cough vaccine. I have only boarded my Chihuahuas once. But It kind of makes me nervous.
Yes they can very much go "hand in hand" a dog that has coccidia has a very weakened immune system (and can obtian permanent damage) and can very easily get pneumonia. They are also at risk for other things, but pneumonia is a big one. I hate coccidia!!! To me its worse then parvo when a dog has coccidia really badly!!!
