We have a 6 month old flat coated retreiver -we've had him for a week now. The breeder is reputable and has assured us that the pup was dewormed. Not so He is infested and we discovered he is now vomiting up roundworms. We are afraid that he has had this since birth and that it may have inhibited his development. He seems smart but is skiddish, hard time feeding him although we are presenting the raw diet he was raised on. Does anyone have experience with roundworms and development problems?. He vomits in the car too and I think it is because he is sick. He had never ridden in a car until a week ago. My husband wants us to return him to the breeder but of course he is so sweet and beloved by many already. Opinions on returning the dog vs. trying to work out the problems? The last straw for my husband is that the dog tries to eat his own feces all the time . Can this habit be broken? Appreciate any help I can get.
Alot of breeders do not guarantee against worms. They are really a simple fix, and you should have already taken the dog to the vet. He would give you some cheap meds, and it should end the worm problem.
To the best of my knowledge the only way worms would have affected his growth is if he was not getting the nutriants from his food. As far as eating poo, there are several over the counters supplements you can give to deter this. I have also her of adding pumkin or pinapple to the food will help. My pups do it, but grow out of it so I have never tried anything. The fact that he eats poo is where the worms could of come from. The breeder could of infact de-wormed him, but because he eats poo, he is re-infested. Did you get a vet check before purchasing him, or did you take him to the vet right after you got him for a wellness check? Alot of breeder require that, and that is where you find out if there are any issues.
As far as returning him, that is up to you. You may want to look at your contract as I doubt any of the problems you mentioned are part of the breeders guarantee, or warrent a refund.
