Our 2yr old female cocker spaniel only poops and pees on the back deck. This has become a nasty chore and would like any advice on training her to go to a new place. She uses a doggy door and I am afraid if I close it she will just go in the house. Please help!
Go back to the basics of training as if she was an 8 wk old puppy again. You have not given her guidence of where to go. When she has to go she uses the doggie door and goes where she chooses. My guess is the deck is the closest thing once she goes out the doggie door. I am sure she is not traveling across the yard to your deck. She is outside, and she knows to go outside. You have to teach her to use the yard.
I would take away the doggie door, and actually teach her where she is supposed to potty.
I have a girl that gets that way whenever it is rainy. She doesn't like to get her feet wet. I agree with the previous post. Close your doggy door and take her out and make her go off the deck. In the beginning I would take a treat to reward her for going where you want her to until she gets the idea that that is the only place she should go. If she slips up and starts going in the house confine her to her crate when she goes inside. She needs re-training with consistancy to get the message across that she is to go in the yard only. You can also try placing a 'pee stake" in the area you want her to go in. You can get them from PetEdge and they give off a scent that "marks" the area where you want the dogs to go potty. Good luck.
