So I have a 6 month old puggle named Kaylie, she is incredibly smart and learns new tricks very quickly. My problem however is that she likes to eat poop whenever she can. It's very disguisting and she even brings it in the house at times. The vet said to put hot sauce on it but that only works half the time. Does anyone else have this problem with their puggle and if so how are you/ did you brake them of the habbit?
First of all, I don't think this has anything to do with the dog's breed. From all the posts I've read, "poop eating" appears to be fairly common in puppies.
Others might have suggestions for things to add to the pup's food that will make his poop taste bad enough that he won't try to eat it. I can never remember what those are. Hopefully someone else will post those suggestions.
What has worked for us may sound like a lot of work but has been very successful: pick it up! Immediately! The pup can't eat what's not there.
Our pup (about 7 months now) stopped the nasty habit for awhile after we cleaned up relentlessly. It's like he lost interest. Then the weather turned a little nasty; we got lazy and sent him out by himself more often. The habit is coming back. If we clamp down again, I'm sure it will get better.
I have heard of adding pineapple or pumkin to food. I have yet to try it, but going to start. I have one pup who is loving those crunchy yummies. I don't know why she started it, maybe because everything is frozen right now. Picking up is the best way to stop them. We have over 3ft of snow, so it is a bit hard to get out and around the yard to clean well.
There are several products on the market that will help eliminate this bad habit. You can try Deter, Forbid, Potty mouth, Nixit or excel. There may be more products out there, but these are the one I can think of.
