Since the start of my senior year in school the teachers and our program director have been preparing us for our trip to Atlantic City to a convention held by the NJSRT. The convention is an annual thing held for educators, technologists and students. For the students it is a review of all we have learned since starting the program. This review is a chance for us to go over all the things we need to know to pass our national registry and also a chance to ask questions about things that we may have had trouble learning. The convention was this week, and all of our teachers were pressuring us to enter what they call an X-ray Bee ... which is like a spelling bee type competition where the students have to get up in front of all the other students and educators and answer questions related to what we have learned and if you answer a question wrong your out. Last 3 persons standing win 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. None of my class mates were much interested in participating, but we were all willing to go and watch since the review would be helpful. our teachers were not happy with the fact that none of us wanted to participate and they tried their hardest to convince us we should.
so the day of the Bee our program director told us we needed to pay $10 if we wanted to enter it. So I told her I was not interested but I would go and watch it. A few of my classmates decided to enter so i figured I would go and cheer for them. Well then I received a text from our director that all of us had been paid for to enter it and it was mandatory now that we all go. I was a little turned off that she was now forcing us to enter. My classmate julie and I were both pretty adamant about not entering, and I even joked with the director about her misunderstanding of the word NO when she told me she paid for us to enter. Julie and I joked with her about throwing the competition by purposely answering something wrong or not answering in the 15 seconds they allotted you to answer the question in.
So finally it is our turn, many students had gone before us and as each answered a question correctly they sat down and the ones that answered wrong had to go sit in the way back of the big hall. so we get up there and the question was asked, and I knew the answer so I just couldn't bring myself to answer it incorrectly. Nevermind the fact that one of our teachers was a judge and i would have felt bad purposely throwing it. So I answered it and julie got it correct too so there we go to sit and wait for our next turn. This went on for about an hour until low and behold, Julie and I were 2 of 3 people left in the competition. Question comes up, I answer it correctly, the other student from another school answered it correctly but Julie didn't so she finished the competition in 3rd place!! Next question comes up and I did not know the answer to it so I took a guess and it was the wrong guess, but the other kid guessed wrong too so we had to answer another question. the moderator put up another question and decided it was too easy of a question and flipped thru a bunch until she was satisfied that the question she put up was hard enough to end the competition. The question she put up was something I had never learned in class. Let me tell you when you only have 15 seconds to answer a question you have no idea about, it is a short amount of time !! So by process of elimination, some of the answers I knew were something else entirely, I picked an answer. Then the moderator announces "we have a winner" but she never said what the correct answer was so me and the other kid had no idea which one of us won, until my classmates and my teachers came up and started screaming and hugging and kissing me. Turns out I won first place in a competition of roughly 150 students, that I never wanted to enter in the 1st place !!!!!!!! i was in total shock, which was apparently pretty evident to everyone cause other students came up to me randomly over the next day to congratulate me and commented on how shocked I appeared when they said I had won lol. Within 5 minutes of the win for Julie and I, all our teachers at the school knew, via text messages sent out by the two teachers who were at the convention, and I had a bunch of congrats text messages sent to me and a few phone calls i had to answer admidst all this mayhem lol. So my one teacher who was one of the judges, took julie and I out for a drink afterwards to celebrate. Last night was the end of the convention buffet dinner where julie and I were awarded our prize for winning the X-ray B. We each got a lovely certificate stating our acheivement and I got a check for $300, and she got one for $150 !!!
They are spoiling the heck out of us at school. They had a congrats cake for us on Wednesday. If it didn't snow today we would have had a pizza party and at some point they are giving us a day off of classes and clinicals but that is still TBA when.
I really didn't think that it would be such a big deal to the school but I guess they think it really is lol !
