My girlfriend has a Bishon Frise - cute little thing but now that I have moved in, I am having to deal with some very annoying habits: 1) High pitched barking if it hears the neighbours come home 2) Jumping up on the sofa or table when food is served and helping himself 3) Suckling on blankets and cushions, making a loud clicking noise in the process 4) Whinging and whining when he does not get attention
My biggest problem is that this happens as often during the night as it does during the day and I am suffering from sleep deprivation. Any suggestions as to what I can do or how I can train him out of some of these?
It sounds to me like the pup has just been plain spoiled. I would start by working on basic obedience. Take a class if she has not been through one yet.
Once spoiled rotten, it can be tough to break, but possible. don't allow her to get on the sofa, table, etc. Teach her off, and put her down on the floor every time you say it. Put her in another room while you are eating. As long as she is able, she will do all the bad things. When she whines for attention, tell her quiet, and ignore her. Use a spray bottle with water when she barks, or whines. Tell her quiet and spray. it works well.
Most important;y is make sure your girlfriend is on board with correcting the bad habits. It will take alot of vigilance and patience to re-train. Both of you must be willing to stay tough and do the training. If you are doing the motions and the girlfriend does not reinforce it when she is with him.....then it will never be fixed.
Another one that just came to mind is that the dog does not like car travel, and starts to groan/whine within minutes of the car starting up, not letting up until he is let out. My observation is that he copes better if exhausted ie after a long walk, as he does if he can stick his head out of the window (not so easy for the driver in icy winters :-)). We have tried short and long distances to try to get him used to it, alas no luck to date. Any suggestions?
