I have 50 years experience of owning, training and showing dogs of many different breeds and yet I can't house train my 8 month old pup!! I have 3 Italian Spinone, Harry 3 and a half, Norman 2 and Wilfred 8 months, the older two have been house trained from being home around 2 days but Wilfred just refuses to be clean. I make a huge fuss of him when he 'goes' outside and put him outside without speaking to him when he gets it wrong but it makes no difference whatsoever. We can come back from a run on the beach and he will 'go' in the house. Any sugestions gratefully accepted!
Have you tried a strict schedule for your puppy? WHen you "make a fuss over him" do you offer a very special, high value treat that is used only for potty-training? (try boiled chicken or freeze dried liver) Do you take your puppy to the EXACT same area to potty each and every time? Do you keep him on a long leash for potty breaks in a specific area? DO you take the puppy outside alone or with the other dogs as distractions? When your puppy begins to make a mistake in the house do you pick him up swiftly & take him outside on leash to his "potty spot" for him to finish where you can then reward him heavily? When your puppy goes in the right place, do you tell him the same word or phrase every time such as "go potty" and then reward IMMEDIATELY? WHen you take your puppy outside at the times when you expect him to need to eliminate and he does not do you then bring him inside and confine him to a crate for a few minutes in order to try again later?
