Hi I feed my dogs some raw food. But I am not sure if pork is ok raw! My frezer broke last night so the dogs are getting a raw diet today. I have deer meat, chicken & a pork roast that have to get used. Please let me know if it is ok to give the pork raw or if I should boil it first.
I work in a meat shop processing pork daily. Pretty much any form of pork is a doggie no-no. Raw pork can have a parasite called Trichinosis. Some commercial pork from the big plants are clear of this, but most farm raised, non-commercial pork, still carries a risk. Trichinosis can make your dog very sick, be very time consuming and difficult to get rid of (the treatment can be as bad as the parasite). Also, pork has a higher fat content than most meat. If you feed your dog too much pork, it can cause massive Diarrhea, which depleats the body of nutrients and water. I have seen this happen to a dog that got a hold of a ham bone (just the bone which was solid with the marrow).
I have also discussed this with my vet. In addition to this, I have worked the for the last 18 years in a meat shop and had to endure several classes on what the USDA expects for human vs dog consumption.
The United States is NOT free from a swine disease known as Aujeszky's Disease or pseudorabies. This disease is incurable in and fatal to dogs.
If your dog hasn't gotten sick, count your blessings and I would highly recommend moving away from feeding it raw pork.
If people had emotions as pure as animals, our hearts would have to tripple in size.
That is what I was worred about. I knew that pork carred some pretty bad bugs. That is why I asked. I am ok because it took to long to get any feed back so I boiled it first. I did not want it to go bad.
