My 9yr old staff has been breathing heavily and panting constantly for the past month - he keeps coughing and sounds like hes choking something up as if theres something stuck in the back of his throat..but theres nothing there! we have taken him to the vets twice now and they say theres nothing blocked so its probably fluid on the lungs, hes been on 4 lots of tablets inc antibiotics but nothing has made any difference - hes still the same even after taking his weeks course of tablets. Hes eating and drinking well still....and still runs around..but hes constantly short of breathe because of this! any help..or solutions on this would be much appreciated. thanks in advance guys ;-)
There can be several different things that could be causing this. Did you allow your vet to take X-rays of his chest so they could determine what exactly it is ? This "probably fluid in the lungs" can easily be determined by an X-ray, as can an enlarged heart and old dog bronchitis. Any of those 3 things would not respond to antibiotics. What medications has he been put on besides antibiotics ? Was he put on a diuretic such as Lasix ? Was he put on any bronchodilators like Aminophylline or Theophylline ? Was he put on a heart medication like Enalapril? Steroids like Prenisone?
