I bought a AKC/ASCA registered female australian shepherd at 6 months old, she is now 9 months old. I cannot get along with her, she doesn't listen, will not house train, won't come when called, actually runs away when called and looks back to see if you are trying to catch her. I just don't know what to do with her!! I am very disappointed! She was kennel raised and I don't think she saw the outdoors hardly at all. She will do her business inside and if she is confined to a kennel she will just lay in the mess and doesn't even care! I have never had a dog do this! I belive she has potential but I just cant reach it! I taught her to sit and stay but when she has any distractions she seems hyperactive. She won't listen and pulls on a leash, I just can't say enough bad about her.....it is making me want to get rid of her, but who wants a dog that doesn't listen. She is so annoyingly hyper that she annoys my two others aussies! Please lmk if anyone can help! I thought about taking an obedience course, but don't want to waste my effort if it wont help. Opinions please!!
First suggestion is training classes. All her training should be started on leash right now, that is the basics. Once the basic training is reliable, you can begin on recall, etc.
Find local classes in your area either at a kennel, Petsmart, or call the local kennel club and ask them, they will direct you.
The housetraining, you need to begin from the start as if this is an 8 week old puppy again. Crating is only a tool, which works only if used properly. Do not use it as punishment.
Begin with taking the dog outdoors as soon as she wakes up in the morning, right after each meal, and right before bed. In between take her out frequently....every 15 minutes until she 'goes'. You can use those key words in conjunction with taking her out....give the command of choice...go potty, do it, whatever you want and use the command while you await her to go...once she does its a happy 'good potty' etc.
Once she goes, you can wait a longer period to take her out again, if she does not...wait 15-20 minutes and back out.
Do not give free raom of the house unattended until she is relably housebroke. Always keep her in your sights when she is out and watch for 'cues' such as sniffing, turning in a circle, beginning to squat etc. If you see a cue, immediately and quietly take her out. Dont get worked up and rushed or raise your voice or she will relate going outside to a bad thing.
That is the beginning of a novel of things that can be done. Research some books to guide you as well. NILIF is a good training system as well, maybe someone here can direct you to where you can find that book?
Sounds like she would be a good choice for clicker training, once you get the hang of clicker training it is so easy and you will wonder why you never used it before. Do a google on clicker training, Karen Pryor is the best as she is the origin and her website has books and dvd's. I taught an 8 week old pup how to sit, lay down, shake, sit up, crawl in a matter of a few days. but it can also be used to teach come and for potty training, you can use the clicker to teach anything! your dog because it sounds like she just did not get any attention is going to need a lot of positive reinforcement. Good Luck give her a chance, think of it as a challenge and think of how good you will feel when you meet your goal!!!
