We are preparing to pick out our new family member, a golden retriever. We have had two in the past, both females, but my husband is considering a male this time. It will be a family friend and will spend LOTS of time outdoors with our horses and hunting/working around our home. It will also be our first larger indoor pet (we now have a 3.5# pomeranian!)and I am a little aprehensive about this. I have no problem with the grooming upkeep, but am wondering if anyone has any preference of male/female.......and for what reasons?
ether gender, they are both great dogs but since you done already have two females go ahead and get a male, but if you do not want puppies then i also suggest that you spay and neuter. hope this helps!!!
my boyfriends mom has a female and she is very smart and doesnt need a leash outside, shee stays right in the yard she is a very good girl. when i went to pick out my first golden i really didnt care to much the gender i just wanted the one that stuck out the most which was the big fat one that was trying to wake everyone up while they were sleeping!. we named him Havoc :)
We take him everywhere, to the beach, lakes, hiking, the park, camping, cookouts everywhere. he is extremely smart, the only problem he has when we have play dates with other dogs, is he humps them hes fixed, he just never stopped. He also cant be off the leash i chased him up the road once and said nope never again. He sees people or a animal or just wants to run and he goes. We have a rottweiler lives next store i think that where he has gotten this very deep mean sounding bark but hes not even close to having a mean bone in his body. but he is awesome at scaring people with his bark.
If you choose a male just make sure you get him neuterd right at 6 months i waited till 8 months and i think it may have an impact on his behavior.
