We've had our three month old puppy puggle for two weeks now. Within the last several days he has started to pee in his crate minutes after being taken outside to relief himself or after meal times. He has made it through the night without any accidents and during the day he is taken outside about every 2 - 3 hours. We don't understand why he has started to pee in his crate after being outside. It appears to be out of "spite" or stubborness because he wants to continue being outside. Any advice would be very helpful.
Still on the fence about the spite theory. Most anyone will say that dogs do not react out of spite, however I have my doubts on that lol.
Where did you get your puggle from? If it was a petstore, then it may be just that he is used to eliminating in a crate as most petstore pups have only their cages to relieve themselves in.
Can you explain your routine with him a little better? do you walk him and then put him in the crate as soon as you come in and then he pees? or do you allow him to play awhile and then put him in the crate and that's when he goes? He may need to be let out more often than every 2-3 hrs. Sometimes when they are that young they need to go every 1/2-1 hr, especially if they have been playing. When he's outside, is it just to do his business and straight back inside or do you allow him to play outside for awhile before bringing him in?
Thanks for responding. Our day starts around 5:30 - 6am, we take him out to take care of business, pee and poop, and bring him in. Around 7am he has breakfast and is allowed to play about 15 - 20 minutes, during this time he also pees and poops. We go out with him around 10 or 10:30 am, pees, poops and is played with for about 30 - 40 minutes. Lunch is around 12:30, he plays for 30 minutes and takes care of business. Around 2:30 he goes out again and is played with for about 20 - 30 minutes. He takes care of business. Dinner is around 5:30, we play with him for about an hour and he also takes care of business during this time. The last outing is 10pm, we take him out and he takes care of business. We praise him and give him a treat every time he pees and poops outside. We have not tried to use a pad as we take him directly outside to take care of business, could this be part of the problem? He hasn't had an accident in his crate during the night, only after we bring him back into the crate after playtime, meal time or when we leave the house (he has always taken care of business before we return him to the crate). He has peed four times in his crate today, why the sudden interest in peeing in his crate? He has the metal crate with moveable divider, which we have adjusted to allow him enough room to stand, sit, turn around, and lay down. It appears to us that he is doing this out of spite because he can't stay out and play all day. We love our puggle, we would really like to understand what is going on and help him eliminate this behavior.
