The kittens are one month old today. Yes, I know, I promised pictures and I'm still working on it. Anyway, my wife made the comment this morning that they'll be ready for their new homes in a couple weeks. This has started a debate in the household. I was always taught that kittens and puppies should stay with mom until they were eight weeks old and I've always been a firm believer in that (mostly because it was me mom who told me). We've had kittens and puppies before and I've always waited eight weeks before allowing them away. But my wife's dad was a professional beagle breeder and she said that he said six weeks is old enough. This has never been an issue before because I have always been in charge of the raising of the babies, but this time my wife found all the new homes and she's the boss of this litter.
So what do you think? Is six weeks old enough? Does it depend on individual development? They do seem to be growing pretty fast and momma-cat-Kali is starting to complain about teeth marks on her teats.
In most states, it is illegal to rehome puppies or kittens before they are 8wks old. In other states it is 7wks. Pa. just changed the law from 7 to 8wks old.
Most breeders due wean the young ones from mom around 5-6wks, but they litter should still stay together. After 8wks, it just depends on develupment. Some breeds need a little bit more help then others.
The new homes will just have to wait until the kittens are 8wks old, it isn't really a debate, it is a law (in most places)
Yes, I agree. Wait until they are 8 weeks. I live in California, and the law is 8 weeks, no younger for puppies and kittens. Every state is different, research the law in your state.
People say they are OK to leave at 6 weeks, only because they are fully weaned, but that last 2 weeks is the crucial time for litter socialization. Most behavioral problems start with leaving the litter too young.
Animals, what animals? My children just have alot of hair!
8 weeks is the minimum age any kitten or puppy should be allowed to leave for their new home. I do believe it is better for kittens to stay with their mom and siblings for a few weeks past that. I think the longer they are with their siblings at least, the better they will behave in a new home. Unfortunately, cats are way different in behavior than dogs and they benefit more from being left with their moms and siblings longer.
