We've been having problems with counter surfing in our house. Not full-on, standing on top of the counters, but standing on back legs with paws and nose poking around looking for goodies.
We've tried different things, including near-continuous leashing. But it always seems as soon as he got loose, the pup would resort to pacing through the kitchen, hopping up to check three different areas of counter top, then nosing into the trash.
THEN I THOUGHT OF SOMETHING.
Our pup does not like sticky things. He HATES sticky things. So here's what we did. Made a long strip of packing tape along the edge of the counter, and curled it over on itself. It leaves about a 1/2 inch strip of all-around stickiness exposed. We have about 12 feet worth of counter with this installed, plus the edge of the lid of the trash can.
The results so far have been striking. He's jumped up just twice (in the same span of time this easily could have been dozens of times). When he approaches a counter, he will get a whiff of the tape, and then quickly turn away.
If anyone has any better ideas, please let me know, but this technique has real promise.
