First of all, I'd like to say hello as a new user to this forum I have 2 shih tzus, one male and one female from different litters, both are about 2 1/2 years old (only a week apart birthdays). My female and male tied about 3 weeks ago and this is her first pregnancy (if indeed the tie was successful). I'm concerned because I have little experience in the way of breeding and not into this for money. I'm actually concerned that I will want to keep all the pups LOL. My question and concern is that my female has not showed interest in eating in the last 2 days but does still drink water and play with family and the male shih tzu. I have done some reading online but wanted to become part of a site that would be valuable to both me and my bitch. I'm open to anyone's advise and would love to hear from shih tzu breeders with any helpful comments or words of wisdom. Thanks in advance for your time
My top suggestion would be to invest in some books on the subject of dogs, breeding, whelping, and puppy raising. A few suggestions are: Dog Breeding For Dummies, Breeding a Litter, Another Piece of the Puzzle: Puppy Development, and there are many many more books out there that can help you. Search amazon.com or go to your local library. You'll get more info than you can on an internet forum and if you buy your books, they'll be at your fingertips even in the middle of the night if needed. Your vet should also be a source of information and advice.
Perhaps this new poster would like to breed her dogs. We all start somewhere and not everyone does things like we would. To answer your immediate questions, yes sometimes bitches get a bit finicky during pregnancy. Try to tempt her with some boiled chicken meat, cottage cheese, eggs and yes give her the calcium rich shells. This should bring her around. I do agree to have good books on whelping and raising puppies. Have on hand a rectal thermometer dental floss for tying off the umbilicus in case she doesn't, and Nutrical gel you get that at Petsmart. Be sure the pups stay warm while mom delivers the others, and feel free to PM me if you need help.
