Need some help!! I have a 2 1/2 year old mastiff with a sensitive stomach. She eats just fine but always acts like shes starving, poops alternate from runny to somewhat solid, but never really good. We have taken her to the vet many times and had her tested for any problems and all test came back clear. We have changed her food and even tryed raw and she still continues to have problems. She is not putting on weight like she should and we are worried. Any help would be apprecitated.
Have you tried probiotics? You can get them anywhere including online and through pet supply mags. I would take away all food and feed chicken, rice, with some insure added for 5-7days. Slowly introduce a good quality food to the mix with the probiotics. Cut back on the chicken and rice as you increase the regular kibble. I for one love Innova and chicken soup for the dog lovers soul dry foods.
Once completely on dry food, always use the probiotics. You can usually get a powder that adds to the food, or a paste. You can always add a teapoon of yogurt and a teaspoon of pumkin to every meal. Both of those help with the runny and loose stools. If you do start getting good solid stool with no problems you can cut out the pumkin and just keep it on hand for emergancies. good luck, and feel free to PM me if you need any other info.
As far as i know he has not tested for that, we have an appointment on friday i will have him test for that. Thanks for your help. Another thing is we have three mastiffs that live with us and they are house dogs and they all eat together. Should i seperate her from them when they eat beacause if i change her food i will have to change all of them or seperate them. Also we leave there food out all the time so they have access to it all day. Should i take it up and only give it to them a couple times a day?
My mom's dog had the same problem. after thousands in tests, it turned out she was allergic to the protein source of her food. She switched her to a salmon based dog food and she has been symptom free for 2 years now. I believe the food she feeds now is the Pro Plan Salmon and Rice sensitive skin and stomach formula. All 3 of your dogs could eat that food if it is easier to have them all eat the same thing. I know in my house I have 4 dogs and free feed them also and it is so much easier when they are all on the same food.
Personally, I don't think it's an allergy, but if you want to try a dog food with a different protein source for all your dogs, be sure to slowly switch over to the new stuff and then give it a few weeks before you make a decision. (It takes time and more than one occasion to develop an allergy and longer than that to rid the body of histamines if allergic.)
