You can find a lot of different types of ear cleaners in the pet stores. Or if you have vinegar at home you can mix up some, 1 part vinegar and 2 parts water, and make your own ear cleaner. Are the ears just dirty or are they infected ?
I use sweet oil and a cotton ball! You can get it at the pharmacy. I use it in my kids ears also when they have a ear infection! Just warm it up a little and a couple drops the ear infection go's away! It works great for cleaning dogs ears too!
Alcohol on q tips is best,it disinfects, and removes excess oil that can attract dirt, which can lead to a yeast infection. Do not use soap and water I would'nt use anything with an oily base except neosporin, which will work in a pinch. I use nothing but alcohol on my Dobies, never have stinky ears.
There are several types you can buy at your local pet store. Vets offices also sell them.
Each type can be for different issues from infections to mites. If the ears are only dirty, along with the other suggestions you can also use a hydrogen persoxide mixed 1/2 and 1/2 with water and use a dampened soft cloth or cotton ball.
I wouldnt use a Q-tip unless your dog sits absolutely still for the cleaning. If they jump you can cause alot of damage if the Q-tip gets accidentally shoved into the ear.
Whenever you clean the ears, no matter what you choose to use...make sure to dry the ear as good as possible as well. If you get too much fluid in there (even water during a bath) bacteria can grow and cause irritation or infection.
