This is my first time of owning a Jack Russell Terrier. My pup Judd was born on 04-03-10 which makes him around 9 or 10 weeks old and I have never heard him bark! I know that he can hear because he responds to voice commands, and he whins so I know that his voice box works... I just can't understand his not barking, I mean to start with I just thought that he was a good dog but I am starting to worry that something might be wrong. Could ANYONE please help me out with this matter?.
Most people would consider a non-barking JRT to be a PLUS! But I understand your concern and the first course of action would be a full veterinary checkup. Beyond that, barking is sometimes a socialization behavior with young pups and it could be that your JRT was removed from his litter prematurely. Pups should remain with their mothersiblings until at least 6-8 weeks.
The only time I experienced a non-barking JRT puppy was a little female I bought who was the sole pup in her litter. She didn't start barking until she was several months old and it was only after she heard other dogs barking in her puppy socialization class.
Then I couldn't get her to stop for the next 14 years!
sometimes jrts just need reassurance. and sometimes it just takes time. i had the same problem with my female and i was worried sick, i took her out to play one day and she finally got so excited she barked! i was so proud of her, but it just tool her getting used to me,and her surroundings for her to come out of her shell and show her true colors! hope this helps!
