We kept one of the kittens that the stray cat had in our yard last summer. This kitten has been nothing short of a nightmare since we have had him. Not mean or nasty nightmare but he is a one man wrecking crew !! He is almost a year old ~ 11 months now to the best of our knowledge and I thought as he got older and bigger he would behave better. Instead, the bigger and older he has gotten, the more of a hellcat he has become. I do not, I swear I do not, ever remember any of my previous cats being this destructive when they were his age.
He is the only cat I have ever had to teach the "leave it" command to and the only one I have ever had to CRATE just so I could get some cleaning done in the house without his "help"!! Besides the thousands of toilet paper and paper towel rolls he has shredded to smithereens, the tons of Q-Tips he has devoured, the walls he has climbed, lamps he has knocked over, figurines he has broken, dishes & glasses & picture frames he has broken, TV set he has pushed over, blinds he has gotten stuck in and even more mayhem than I care to recall, he has been beating up my older female cat several times a day.
Before he was neutered he used to torment Scully endlessly. I thought it was because she is female and he wasn't neutered. Well he has been neutered for roughly 6 months now and he still will not leave her alone. He is being an extreme bully to her and I don't know how to make him stop. He doesn't try this with our male cat, which I thought if anyone was going to have a problem with the kitten it would be him. but they play once in awhile and when Fox growls at Tart, Tart backs off right away. When Scully growls at Tart, Tart just torments her more til she runs away but then he chases her. Now whats happening is that when he chases her, thunder (our chow mix) gets involved and he goes after Scully, instead of Tart. So she winds up having to defend herself against both of them. When Thunder gets involved, Tart usually backs off but then Scully has to defend herself against Thunder. I don't think Thunder would ever hurt her, he hasn't done anything to her in the 11 years they have lived together, but I don't want to take a chance.
Now Scully has started licking herself bald on her belly and between her back legs. Thats a sign of total anxiety issues and I am sure it stems directly from being harassed by the little beast. So how do I stop him from harassing her all the time? Even his mother will growl or swat at him and he will back off. But it seems that when Scully does this it only entices him more.
your cat is probably like this because he has a need for the wild he was born wild if he remembers it or not hes got those instincts the worst thing you could have would have been getting him neutered its to late for that though hes got nowhere to go with all his energy maybe you should try a scratching post and catnip toys here is to you and your cat anna.
Thank you both for your advice. I do agree he probably has some "wild" in him from being born and raised outside for awhile. However his mother is not a feral cat. She is just a (no longer) stray that someone owned and let loose, unspayed, into the neighborhood. Big difference between a stray and a true feral cat.
I will have to disagree with you about the neutering. Neutering does not enhance behaviors like this. In fact neutering often eliminates some of them. When he was unneutered, he would try like crazy to get outside. He was successful on numerous occasions. the last occasion he wound up severely beaten up by some unknown animal, most likely another cat, and 4 days of being out in 2ft deep snow. Since his neutering and subsequent house arrest so he could heal properly, he hasn't once even tried to get outside. He does enjoy sitting in the front door and watching the goings on outside but when you open the screen dorr he will go away rather than run out.
Besides all that, neutering and spaying is very important to do. Not only does it help prevent unwanted medical issues like cancer to ensure a long healthy life, it also prevents the unwanted births of kittens. There are so many unwanted kittens and cats in shelters looking for homes right now already. Many of these kittens and cats never do find homes and wind up having to be euthanized, that we really shoul have all our animals psayed and neutered so that we don't allow them to bring more kittens into the world that potentially could end up in a shelter or dead.
Do you keep a spray water bottle around for when your animals misbehave? My 2 cats just hear me pick it up and say "no" and they stop doing what they are doing. This may sound mean or cruel, but it really isn't.
Try this solution. when you say "no" and he continues to misbehave, squirt him just once or twice. He should stop. Try not to squirt your female, she seems to have enough trouble.
I've had the odd cat that sounds like your little beast Scout. I have a friend who has a 7 year old neutered male who regularly attacks her legs, and yowls for attention....he's not sick, he's just a bugger! I believe some male cats just have it in their personality to be a bit aggressive, confrontational, and general pests. I think if you're using the conventional methods , like using a spray bottle, fly swatter (to smack hard on an object of furniture) and seperation in a crate, you're probably doing about as much as you can do. He could grow out of this stage, but this could also just be his personality. If he is still adversely affecting your female cat, I would try to find him a good farm home where he can take his attitude out to the hay loft! Good luck with him.
That made me LOL because that is exactly what he is !! The last few days have been a nightmare with him. He has finally figured out how to get up onto the ledge I have near the top of the cathedral ceiling where I keep all my expensive, breakable, wolf knickknacks. They are up there so that no animal, or human, in the house could accidentally break any of them. They are so high up I need a ladder to get up there to dust. Well chucklehead figured out a way to get up there and knocked down everything. He spent the better part of the last 3 days locked in the bathroom until we could figure out a way to prevent his access. My husband fell, and almost broke his neck, literally, trying to get him down from there. I have never in my life experienced a cat like this and I tell ya, if he was my first experience owning a cat, I would never in a million years get another one!!
I went to buy a spray bottle 2 days ago, and of course walked out of the store without one so thats on the to do list for today. i also thought about buying him a harness and a long rope and staking him outside in the yard a few hours each day to let him get some of the ants out of his knickers. I would stay out there with him the whole time. I just don't know if that idea would work against me in the way that I would have to start worrying that he would try and run out the front door everytime someone came in and out. Since he has been neutered he hasn't tried escaping the house and I don't want to have to go through that all over again. Especially with the winter coming up. Bad idea?
Ok...but, I was just teasing! How much would you sell a kitten 5-6 weeks for? Do you need to see pictures? Or maybe you might know by this: One is large female calico, two tabby kittens, and one orange calico. Thier wild.)
I think maybe you should try and find a rescue group in your area to take them in, socialize them and then find them homes. The rescue group will see that they get vaccinated, spayed and/or neutered and placed in good homes. If you decide to adopt them out yourself i would ask for at least $50 a kitten so that may discourage someone from adopting them out to be used as bait or research animals. You can't charge much more than that unless you take them to the vet and have them vaccinated and tested for feline leukemia and feline aids. If you do that then I would charge someone at least a $100 to cover those costs. Good luck because it really isn't easy these days to find permanent homes for all the animals that need them.
It has been suggested to me that I should perhaps put this cat to sleep since he is such a hellion. I realize that the tone of this thread is not at all positive about Tart. I have ranted much about his demonic behavior and left out all the angelic characteristics he has. Sometimes with an animal as precocious as Tart is, it is hard to see past to the good qualities he has. So I thought I would take a moment to say a few positive things about him so that some may not see him as all bad. I have had 5 cats in my life. tart makes number 6. All my cats have had varying personalities, some were more like dogs, some were affectionate, some not so much. I don't think out of all of them, I have ever had one that was as sweet as Tart is. He is really very lovable, preferring to sleep on top of you than anywhere else in the house. If he isn't sleeping on you, he is curled up with the dogs. He plays with our littlest dog Max which in all my years have only had one other cat that would play with a dog. He is always nuzzling up to Scout and Max, as well as us. which doesn't help my allergies as he is always rubing his face on mine and making me break out and itch. I have always said he would have made a little girl the dream kitten. He definitely loves to cuddle and I can totally see him allowing a little girl to dress him up and cart him around in a doll carriage lol. So as much as he drives me out of my skull with his antics and devilry, he really has the sweetest disposition and totally melts my heart. I wish I could have captured a picture of him the other day when he was running around the house dragging balloons behind him lol. Tart is Tart and I guess as much as he makes me mad, he makes me lmao.
