Hey All ;) After the puppies have been born, I've been deinitely considering getting my girl 'LuLu' spayed. Which I know most all here will most definitely agree! I just had to do this one time being that I knew she would be an excellent momma, and we wanted a Junior! I would love input on the procedure, and cost. I am very paranoid of the procedure being that her brother, which was the same blue nose color, practically twins!! He went under and never woke up :( It's a very scary thing for me because I said that I would never do that to her. But, we plan on getting her back with her companion, soon as the pups are sold. Please help reassure my conscience ;)
for a discount spay coupon and a list of participating vets in your area. That should help defray the cost of the procedure to allow your wallet some extra money to do some pre anesthetic procedures that can help minimize the risk of anesthesia. A mini profile to ensure proper organ function and a coagulation profile to ensure no bleeding issues are present can be done. A heartworm test should also be done prior to the surgery.
Any time an animal is put under anesthesia there is a risk of them not making it. Thousands of animals are spayed and neutered daily and it is very uncommon for them not to pull through. The risks increase with age, certain breeds, and underlying health problems. If you have a young, otherwise healthy dog, there is no reason to suspect that she will not pull through. If she is a relative of the dog you had neutered, a blood relative not just a housemate, then it may be advantageous to investigate why he did not pull through. It could be a genetic issue that caused that tragedy. He could have simply been allergic to the anesthetic used and there is no test for that unfortunately. Or it may just have been the vet staffs incompetence. There is really no way of knowing for sure.
Your girl shouldn't be spayed until all her milk has dried up anyway so that should buy you a month or two ( don't know when she had her litter) and in that time you can investigate the vet's on the list you get from FOA and choose one. Ask for recommendations from your friends or neighbors.
It is always a good idea to alter a pet that you do not plan to use for breeding. The benefits of spay/neuter outweigh keeping them intact.
Spay costs vary from area to area. You would have to contact your vet and inquire about price. Give them the pets age, breed, and weight for an accurate estimate. Also they will reccomend pre-surgical blood work. If it is an additional cost you can handle, I would suggest doing it. It can detect issues that could effect their response to anesthesia, etc.
Spaying is not much more intense healing and pain wise than a c-section. It is more in depth obviously as they are removing the uterus. You will be given pain meds to give her to keep her comfortable and will need to keep her activity level down until she heals some. An e-collar is best to stop her from licking or biting at her incision.
Local ASPCA, Humane Societies, etc often do low cost spay/neuter clinics through out the year. You could call your local shelter and ask if they have that information.
She will have to wait until AFTER the pups are weaned completely before having it done, so this gives you time. May I suggest you use any funds from the selling of her pups to pay for her spay costs?
Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass. It is about learning to dance in the rain.
Wow! thanks for the suggestion on using of the funds that I may get! Never thought of that one. My boyfriend and I are splitting whatever we acquire, so hopefully it will cover some of her expense. She is a female blue-nose pitbull. July she will be 2, and has always been very slender/slim build. Which always bugged me...So now she is eating like no tomorrow and still is soo skinny that she looks malnutritioned:( but i understand that she is eating for 8!! A friend of mine suggested that I mix in Gerber rice cereal to help promote weight gain in my Lucy and that it would most certainly plump up her pups, for better sale/pricing, being that she is not papered. All thoughts and input are very much appreciated! Thanx All ;)
