Is there a vet in the house? My basenji has had a bad coughing problem followed immediately with what sounds like a clearing of the throat, as if he may throw up something, but never does. The vet gave him temaril and hycodan for irritation and an anti-biotic I believe. The cough goes away while using it but comes back shortly after stopping. This has been going on for 3 or more months. He wakes from his sleep many times a night to these coughing fits. aprox 10 coughs and then the throat clearing with nothing coming out. He had a full body x-ray, to check for problems in the lungs and heart and any other problems (clots or tumors) and nothing was found. Anyone have any ideas as to what this may be. They DID rule out kennel cough. We are watching his diet, changed his diet and tried exercise. PS. it does NOT get worse when he is real active. To me it does not seem to be that he is running out of breath. Thanks in advance.
I know this may not be exactly what you want to hear, but if I were in your situation, I might get a second opinion from a different vet. In order to diagnose the problem, there are many tests that can be run like xrays and bloodwork. Without out an actual diagnosis you will forever be guessing and trying treatment after treatment.
my dog Max has a short soft palate and the sound of the clearing of the throat is the biggest indicator in that. BUT, does he do this when he eats/drinks? If he had what Max has, it would happen then. I just posted a topic on this to see if anyone has information for my dog. But i'm curious if you noticed it happening when hes eating.
