I have 1 1/2 year old Shih Poo. He's normally a fun loving dog but a handful of times including last night he growled at me and has finally bit me enough to break the skin of my finger.
My dog was under my bed, my 6 year old boy was under the bed as well and trying to play with Gizmo...normally Gizmo and my son are buddies. Last night Gizmo growled at my son...not a playful growl. My son came out from under the bed so I leaned down to see why Gizmo was growling and reached my hand towards the dog. He was close enough to pet so I patted him on the head, then I noticed he was chewing on something so I tried to grab it and he then growled at me and bit my finger. What should I do to stop this from happening again? I'm not afraid of what he would do to me but I'm afraid he will do this my child or any other children at my house. Thanks for the advise!
it sounds like he was guarding his prize. I would teach him drop it or leave it, and not allow him to be able to get under things with his prize. He needs to know that you as the alpha can take what ever you want, and he doesn't have a right to guard it.
