Hi, peeps... My Newfie mama of 7 day old pups is having issues with her downstairs... well, maybe not but it looks gross. It's still kinda inside-out looking and swollen and she has this bloody mucousy discharge that just dangles until she sits down and then it's all over the floor. It's matting up in her tail. I need to know a) is it benign or is it a sign of something wrong and b) is it okay to stick her in the tub and shower her behind and c) if so, what can I wash it with that won't mask her scent from the puppies? Other than that she is acting pretty normal-- taking care of pups and pottying fine, not complaining or looking too overly miserable (other than staring out the window and daydreaming about the freedom she once had ). Oh, and if it is normal, when can I expect it to stop? I'm getting a little tired of following her around with a Swiffer mop to keep my kids from stepping in it.
Lol - expect it to be like this for another week or so. Try to keep her in a confined area, like block off part of the kitchen or something like that. If you wash it off it will be back in 10 minutes. We only have short haired dogs and fortunatly they don't seem to be very bad after they have pups. I would trim her fur very close in that area so that it isn't getting into a nasty matted up mess. Momma's will usually be good about keeping themselves cleaned up so maybe a hair cut would be all that's needed to help her out a little.
Thanks-- unfortunately our house has a pretty open floor plan for the living area and there's no way I can block off a section of the living room or the living room itself because all the doorways are too wide for baby gates. But she mainly stays in the living room anyway because that's where her babies and food and water are. I have my kids on a limited living room access plan at the moment anyway because they're 4 years old and I don't trust them alone in the room with a bunch of cute cuddly puppies. So the main concern is really that it is normal for her to have this discharge, and I'm glad to see that it is. We had her groomed about 3 days before she had her pups and they pretty much shaved her per my instructions-- she looks like a black lab now-- except they left her tail fluffy. Lol she looks so dumb! I think I will take your advice and give her tail a trim so it doesn't get so gross. Thanks again!
