Any dog behaviour experts out there? We have two dogs - a 9 month old border collie, and a 13 week border collie kelpie cross. Both very bright pups and generally get along well. Bowie, the border collie, picked up house training really well within a couple of weeks. The little one, Boo is another story... she's incredibly clever and responds well to training in other areas, eg sitting, waiting for food and recall is excellent. She seemed to take a while to get the hang of potty training, but we thought we were making progress. We followed the same process as with Bowie, taking her outside after every nap, after every play time, and every meal, and she will go to the toilet outside when instructed to do so. But night times are the worst and we seem to be stuck in a pattern. She will go for 4 or 5 nights without an accident inside, and we think she's cracked it, and then she will suddenly have a sudden relapse and poo and pee (normally BIG time) everywhere. The two dogs sleep in the same room happily enough. We have tried feeding her where she sleeps, which seems to work at first and then a few nights later.. disaster again! We have also tried getting up in the middle of the night to take her outside, but that doesn't make any difference either. Does anyone have any tips? We've had her for nearly 2 months now and we feel that she should have got the hang of it by now. We're going through paper towel like it's going out of fashion and it's driving us to distraction!! Is it just a case of being patient and consistent and hoping she'll get there? Or are we doing something wrong? Is it something to do with a power struggle of some kind with the other dog (the little one is definitely the dominant one!) Thanks for all suggestions!!
Sounds like you are doing everything that should be done. Could it be that she is crying at night to be let out to potty and you are not hearing it so she has no other choice but to relieve herself in the room? I have always crate trained my puppies and kept their crate where I sleep so that if they needed to go out and cried I would hear them and respond.
I agree with scout. Sounds like you are doing very well, and having the older puppy who is trained definitely helps. I think that you must remember your dog is only 13 weeks old. Many dogs are not fully potty trained until they are much older (6 months- a year in some cases.) You just have to be persistent like you said. Oh and you didn't mention treats. Are you giving delicious treats when the puppy does it's business outside? That was a huge help for us. We treated every time our pup went outside, and gave her NO attention when she went inside. And we used a special treat that was separate from training. Also, if you aren't already doing so, pull the puppies water dish about 2 hours before bed time. Don't get discouraged either, sounds like you have a bright puppy and it'll be there in no time.
