I don't think it is a good idea when the government is always trying to protect me from my self
I don't disagree with you or anyone who feels this way. In fact to a large degree I feel the same way. I do feel though, as someone who is compassionate about the welfare of animals, all animals, that something needs to be done. It seems that nobody at the level of being able to do something, for example the USDA, has done their job. You cannot convince me that the "inspectors" do not turn a blind eye when "inspecting" these kennels, if they even truly do. Education is out there, has been out there for many years and still people think they are getting a quality dog from a pet store. They still do not understand where their dog came from and why they shouldn't have purchased a puppy from a pet store. So what other options are there to help these stores go away on their own? And how many more animals are going to suffer needlessly while we wait?
This country is full of the "all about me" population. It is a shame that when finally someone somewhere decided to do the right thing, it's going to be the "all about mes" that stop it. It is sometimes no wonder this country is the way it is.
I -who is super paranoid, don't take my rights away- have no problem with this.
There are already places where this has gone into effect, and many places where it was never the norm, and all it does is up the numbers adopted form shelters. Sure some people likely go to back yard breeders then but it at least gets rid of one equally bad or worse option.
