ok, i have had heidi for about a month now. I got her from a VERY neglectfull breeder. She only wieghed like 6 pounds when i brought her home. vet siad she was full of hook worms. on the way home from getting her i thought i felt puppies, but the vet said it was probably just her intestines moving alot cause she was not used to being fed regularly. exepying what the vet siad, i brought her home, gave her the wormer that was given to me and continue still to give the vitamins the vet gave her. As of about 2 days ago, she has milk. she is weighing about 11 pounds now, and getting boobs, but not big. she is deffinatly fatter, but does not look pregnant. i am going to bring her back to the vet today to see if they will give her an x ray. i called and asked if they could, and she said the pups wouldnt show untill 6 weeks gestation. how do i tell as the x ray cost 120 $ per pic. i am a single mother of 4 and connot afford to do it early and not see anything just to repeat agian later. i love my dog and am planning on spaying her after the pups come.

There is no way to tell other then x-ray or ultra sound. If she is producing milk, than she should show on the x-ray. My girls tend to start producing milk around 1-2wks before delivery, but all bitches can be different.
Wow, you inherited quite a responsibility. Would the breeder know if she tied with a male, or even had access to a male? Not that she would have accurate information if the poor dog was neglected.
I can only tell when my bitch is pregnant about two weeks prior to delivery. When she lays on her side, her abdomen will rise up and down, almost as if she has a ball in her belly. If it is fat, it will lay flatter and on the floor, but pups maintain the abdomen shape when laying on their side. She will also nest a few days prior to delivery, by digging holes, or digging at bedding in an attempt to create a place to give birth. If you determine she is pregnant, read the thread near the top of the Dog Talk forum that Pyrmom wrote. It is in bold print and is excellent to help provide info for a first time whelping. I don't do xrays b/c I remember my OB/GYN telling me not to have them when I was pregnant, so I just wait for pups to arrive. I am sure they are much safer now than they were 24 years ago, but I sort of like the surprise, and our xrays are over $100 also.
He is your friend, partner, defender, your dog. You are his life, love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.
Something else to be concerned about with this bitch is the fact that if she's pregnant, she will have already given the pups hookworms, which can kill pups very quickly. I would contact the 'breeder' and see if you can get any info from her about your dog tying with another, and what breed it was. I would definitely get the x-ray because it's nice to have a puppy count, just in case she's only carrying 2-3 fat pups. In this instance, you may be requiring a c-section for her. Be ready to worm those pups, and the dam for hook worms...they are one of the nastier parasites. Good luck with her.
