Hi, my name's Jes and i love riding, i've been doing it for ten years and i've never had this problem before!!! i grew up riding an arabian hunter/jumper and did very (and i mean very lol) little dressage, and he got sick with founder so i ended up switching to a horse who rode saddleseat and i didn't start having problems at the canter until i switched back to hunt seat :( i used to gallop my horse around all the time before he got sick, but now i get nervous at the canter. i put on my calves to much and the horse shoots out form under me and i pull back on the reins and hunch forward and on two different horses this has resulted in the horse tripping and falling and me getting hurt. i don't know what it is but i can't seem to relax! can anyone help?
A few tips, Take deep breathes, and trust your horse. If your horse knows your scared, he will be too. But if your confident, your horse will do 100% better. Sit deep in your saddle, almost pretend your but is glued to your saddle and that gives you more control. Hold your reins at a good length so your not tugging your horse, but just enough that you can feel the horses mouth and if you need to pull back, its easier for you and its easier on your horse. Also, if you find that you ''can not'' control your horse at a canter, go back to basic walk/trot and ground work, and try to connect more with your horse and that should help you. I got my horse early last year, and only started cantering this year with him. Now we have a great bond, and we both trust each other so much.
the best thing I ever did was get into western. I rode english my whole life, and still enjoy it. When I had to take some time off for a bad back injury, I got into western. Well I got an english horse, so back into my english saddle. I was very nervous even just trotting. I kept my english bridle and got a western saddle. The seat sits much deeper, and you are more comfortable. almost any horse can tolerate a western saddle. You can post in one also. borrow one if you have to, but even a cheap one(got my wintec for $300) is so worth the investment.
I still have problems with my mare, but that is becuase of her canter throws you forward and I am still getting used to it. Any other horse I am on, I have no problems at the canter, and I can switch from english to western with no problem. I also am much more confident in my english saddle then I had ever been.
