I got a 14 week old male Maremma puppy as company for my nearly 3 yr old female Maremma. He is a lovely boy and Tessa (3yr old Maremma) is very gentle with him, but the problem I have is that he keeps on latching onto the fur around her neck. She stands there until he releases but it must hurt as he takes clumps of hair away with him. Is this normal behaviour, I have been using a spray bottle with water to try and stop him but I'm wondering if I'm doing the right thing or should I let them sort it out themselves. Thanks for any suggestions
Your post made me laugh. It reminded me so much of when our Anatolian, Scout, was a puppy. She used to grab onto our Great Pyrs tail and drag her around the house. God Bless Princess for having the patience of a saint with Scout.
I would continue to discourage the behavior as often as necessary but I think your older Maremma will let the puppy know when enough is enough. That might be the most effective way. These guys know that it is just baby behavior and they generally have a high tolerance level for it. As the pup gets older your older dog will start teaching him manners.
