Belgian Malinois

Medium size 50 lbs pup, has all of a sudden stopped eating. Not sure why?? She nibbles but will not eat her normal allotted (2-3cups per meal) of kibble twice a day... She is also shedding, like mad! And continues to have a mucus discharge from her eyes, daily. What is this an indication of? We live in South Florida where it has been quite humid and hot, but the pup spends 85% of her day, indoors with someone, so I wouldn't think the heat is a problem, as she is consistently indoors in a a/c'd environment.
She's not depressed, very lively and warm with all of us all the time. She does, however, sleep all the time as well, especially when she is home alone with me and Im working. Out cold for the majority of the 8 hour day. She springs to action, once my 8 year old get home (which is fine with me). Concerned owners here who want the best for her, but are puzzled by her actions.

"2-3 cups per meal"

Are you kidding me? So you're feeding her anywhere from 4 to 6 cups a day? Are you measuring or guessing?

Have you contacted the breeder for advice?

Just to give you a sense of why I'm surprised -- I have a year old brittany that weighs in at 40 pounds. He's a mad man when it comes to energy. He gets just a little over 1 cup twice a day. That's probably less than 1/2 of what you are feeding your pup in a single meal!

First, I would make an appointment at the vte for her to be checked out.
Next...start measuring her food when you give it. I think that you are over feeding her and that may be why it seems as though she is nibbling but not 'eating'

In comparison...I have a Doberman, 60 pounds. She eats once daily at 2 1/2 cups.

The ye drainage is somethng that I would have looked at by a vet.
Are you feeding the same brand the previous owner was feeding?

Try measuring her food and giving her 1 cup each feeding to start and see if she finishes it. If she does and seems to be interested in more, give another 1/2 cup.

This will help you to adjust what she is actually 'able' to eat in 1 feeding so that you are not overfeeding and worrying if she does not clean it up.

Her eye issue is one I would have seen by a vet. As far as her eating goes it may just be that she is older now and her metabolism is changing and she doesn't need quite so much food to maintain herself. You could try cutting back on the amount you feed to see if that makes any difference.

As far as how much is too much or too little to feed all depends on the individual dog. I have a 95lb dog that only eats two cups of food a day and besides the 1 dog biscuit she gets in the morning thats all she needs to eat to maintain proper body condition. A lot of people who have my breed feed in excess of 6 cups of food a day to their dogs. As a comparison, I have a 20lb dog who eats 1 1/2 cups of food a day with nothing extra but his 1 biscuit in the morning. Then my mother's dog is 65lbs and eats 4 cups of food a day with canned food and a ton of other stuff in it. This is why I generally tell people not to follow the feeding guidelines on the back of the food bags. They are only guidelines and should be adjusted to fit the individuals eating habits, exercise level and metabolism.
