Hi all, I have a catahoula/lab puppy who is a little over 3 months old. Bee is her name. My question is when will she start to recognize her name fully. Sometimes I think she gets it when I call her, then other times she just goes about her business and doesnt acknowledge it at all. I have started using a lead leash while calling her, if she ignores me I will give it a little tug towards me until she comes. I have been consistent doing the same thing over and over. Sometimes it works, other times it does not. She is a smart puppy, she has learned to sit, give paws, stay and lay down for treats. She is house broken already, sleeps in my bedroom at night on her doggie bed and is great in everyway. Also she will not leave the poor kitty alone for nothing. I know Bee wants to make nice and play with the cat, but she is very rought and likes to stand over the cat. I usually have a rolled up magazine that I will take and bang on something to get her attention when she is bothering the cat, what else can I do? Any tips will be appreciated.
You should make a sudden and loud noise every time Bee gets too rough. Like stomp your foot, or clap your hands, or snap your fingers in her face, or stand in-front of her so she can't see the the cat so she looses interest.
There's no such thing as a bad dog, only a bad owner.
I dont think the oldness matters cos my dog learnt her name a few weeks after we got her.Anyway Bee would kinda struggle to learn her name cos you have used it for 3 months and she will think it's part of your daily language because she already learnt that bee isnt her name, and to make her learn that, it's like making her forget sit and trying to teach her lydown with the name of 'sit'.So ok,first make sure you have nothing to bother bee, like the cat or any of her toys. When she is 1 meter away call out'Bee'and slap the floor with your hands,or click your hands and do anything you can to make her come, dont do anything to make her know that your angry for example, dont stomp your foot incase she thinks your angry. Also don't say anything else, like come.If she dose come praise her and give her treats.Make sure you use an high pitched and happy voice.tell me if it works!!
I start VERY early with teaching come or or to come to there name, If you have used her name to much, she may be desentised to it. I would start by picking a favorite treat like cut up hot dog pieces, do this excerise in a LOW distraction area to start, in CLOSE quarters, like your living room, step away from her, say "BEE COME" when she approaches you give her a piece of hot dog, repeat, if she is food motivated believe me she will get it right away a favorite toy can also be used, GRADUALLY increase distance and distractions. Try to wait until she is NOT looking at you to use the "come" command. When using a leash pulling her to you at first is fine but you want to get to the point where you do not have to do that, I like to walk away then turn around quickly and in a VERY UPBEAT voice SAY " BEE come" you want her TO WANT to come to you NEVER EVER call her to you to disipline her, this will make her not come. AS for the cat issue my labs LOVE to chase the cat they NEVER hurt the cat they just love the chase LOL:) For this I use the "LEAVE IT" command if you have a solid leave it and they know what it means it will work, if you need help on how to teach this let me know, I have a few different ways I teach leave it. The leave it command in INVALUABLE for ANYTHING you want your dog to walk away from or not put in there mouth.
