I took my 11month old black lab to the dog park Sept 1st. As I was playing fetch with another dog I look back to make sure my dog was behaving, and saw another dog had mounted her. I remember thinking, it looked odd. She was just standing there and the dog was just mounted on her... not really thrusting from what I could tell. I didn't think much of it b/c I didn't think my dog was in heat. In fact I already had an appt. with the vet to get her spayed on Sept. 24th. But now she has a light tan discharge, is sleeping a lot more and heavier than normal, and her nipples are starting to peak through he fur.

I don't know anything about the mating process. Is it normal for a male dog to mount and just stand there? With my dog being 41 days from her 1st bday, could she have been in heat and I didn't even know it? Is it normal for her to continue to have discharge if she is pregnant?
Yes it is possible for a dog to be in heat and an unexperienced owner not know it. As for your question about whether the male would mount and not thrust, but just stand there: my guess is you missed the thrusting ("while playing fetch with another dog") and witnessed the "tie". If you are going to put your female through the pregnancy, whelping and puppy-raising process, you have lots to learn. The information you need is best gathered WELL IN ADVANCE. You now have much research to do. Please do not wait until your female has a problem to ask more questions. I would suggest you seek the advice of your vet immediately.
