I just got two silky terriers. Now before I got them I did read up on the breed, so i could know everything about them, because I was told they were nothing like yokies. These dogs are kennel dogs. I got them from a rescue. The dogs came from breeder, and keep in small spaces with hardly no contact with humans. These babies are scared to death of people. What do I do so they can warm up and get use to me and being around other people ?
Must have been a less than lovely breeder BTW. I am a breeder, but my dogs are raised in the home, not in kennels or crates and are with the family all the time.
Let them have time to check out and slink about their new surroundings. Speak in a calm voice when talking to or around them.
Let them come to you! Have treats with you all the time, especially when sitting on the couch, etc. You can toss an occasional treat to them to eat. Once they seem calmer, toss the treat a bit closer the next time.
I would give them at least a couple weeks to settle in and feel safe again. Soon they will come right to you for the treat and take it from your hand. They just need time to adjust.
Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass. It is about learning to dance in the rain.
