We are getting ready to take our 9 month old Bullmastiff in for an FHO on his right hip due to Avascular Necrosis of the Femoral Head. Does anyone have any experience with this type of procedure? Just wondering how they cope? We were also told amputation might be an option. Any advice?
I worked with a vet that actually did quite a few FHO, the dog's all did very well, Most of them were Much MUCH better than they were before the surgery and evetually with good physical therapy ran with out pain. A lot of the out come depends on your vet and how well they do the surgery, then good PT at home,(once aloud) Swimming is always the best, but building up the muscles in the hip area is what you want to aim for. You can start looking in your area for PT for dogs, some places now offer indoor swimming and PT for dogs. Good luck hope all goes well
