Bloodhounds

I have a 1 1/2 year old bloodhound that I need advice on training on the leash. We got him when he was 10 months old so I did not get to work with him before he was so big and strong. I need to know what is the best way to train him on a leash. I have never leashed trained an animal that can't keep his nose off the ground. Does anyone have any suggestions? I would love to be able to take him for walks without getting pulled all time.

LOL bloodhounds are hard becuase they are bred to have their nose to the ground :) I would try to first teach a "WATCH ME" command, use a favorite treat and hold it next to your eye and say "WATCH ME" then when he looks at your face give him the treat, do this inside your home with out distractions when he gets good at it then move on to the leash Take small steps and give the watch me command, do it over and over again taking small steps, it may take a lot of practice but hopefully it will work. Also teaching a good strong SIT will help as well when he want to pull you can put him in a sit. Because it is his nature to want to smell, you will NOT be able to break this and your best bet is to use distraction techniques to get him to look at you and want to be next to you. Another FUN thing would be to look into TRACKING with him would be a GREAT outlet for him and help to stimulate his brain and he will get to do some work he was bred for. There are some great tracking books out there you could experiment and train yourself. Good luck hope this helps. there are a lot of people who I am sure can give you advice as well.

Thank you very much for your reply. I will try your suggestion. He was very good in obedience class with the watch me. I know its going to be tough when we get outside because there is so much to distract him. I would like to try tracking with him because I think it would be interesting. He has to smell every where the other dogs we have, have been in the yard before, when he goes out. Thanks again for the advice!

Bloodhounds walk by scent not sight. Get a pinch collar while training your hound to walk on a leash. They don't realize they are pulling you. You can also try a no pull harness for large dogs. They are made a little differently to help aid against pulling. Make sure you are prepared for a sudden takeoff as well. My bloodhound is great on a leash but occasionally will jump and try to go after a car. Pinch collars do wonders for keeping them in check while training. With such a strong instinct for sniffing out smells you gotta be a little understanding to these giant love bugs they just cant help it. Good luck.
