About a week ago, my dog had puppies. We've been keeping them outside and shes put them in a corner of the patio. Today, when we came out one of the puppies had died. We were wondering if we should move them or how we could make them more comfortable and safe. Also, what could have caused the puppies death?
The pup could have frozen to death, they have no way to generate heat, mom had to do that. Bring them outside, and give her spot away from the traffic in the home. A spare bedroom or bathroom would work great. The mom probably put them in the corner tring to keep them warm.
I hope you have learned from this mistake, and have her spayed asap. that poor pup.
Its likely the pup died of hypothermia...puppies are NOT capable of regulating their body heat and needs both mom and another heat source as well for the first several weeks.
Bring those pups and mom IN the house! Give them an area that is quiet, draft free, not a main area where alot of activity is going on. Mom should be given a whelping box and an enclosed area to keep her in as well. The whelping box should have a heat source be it a heating pad (old style without the auto shut off) or a heat lamp. The lamps and heat bulbs can be bought at any feed store as well as WalMart.
Make sure mom is getting a quality food and is fed at least 2 times a day. If they seem cold, low activity, crying alot, etc..take mom and pups to the vet for a check up.
Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass. It is about learning to dance in the rain.
