Help! My 17 yr. old son brought home a 5 week old GSD! he gave me the number of the lady he got it from and she said she had nine of them and couldn't handle it so she got rid of the parents and all 9 pups! I called my vet this a.m. but he can't see me until Thursday. The puppy seems healthy it eats, plays, barks, bites and don't forget poop poop poop! My boxer seems to be doing okay with the new puppy but the vets office says I cannot get vaccines for the puppy until 8 weeks. I am feeding it special puppy food I bought at the local pet store here in town and I am putting chicken broth on it, and it seems to be doing okay with that. Any suggestions on what else I can do?
5 weeks old I would keep it on lock down lol. No contact with any other dogs other than your own. I wouldn't even allow your Boxer to have contact with other dogs because he may bring home something to the puppy. Allow the puppy to only potty in your yard in an area where you are certain that no other dogs would have access to go. Like not in the front yard where someone walking their dog down the street could easily allow their dog to potty on your lawn.
I would bring your pup to the vet in a large carrier or carry him and don't set him on the ground in the reception area or let him have contact with any other dogs in the waiting room. Maybe just sit in your car until a receptionist comes out to get you for your appointment. Feed him a high quality puppy food. Nothing that can be found in a supermarket or Walmart.
Might sound extreme but given the questionable environment he came from I would treat him like he was a newborn baby when it comes to exposure to things. Wouldn't take him out to the petstores either at this point.
Who allows their dog to become pregnant and then gives away the parents AND the pups? I hope that person is never allowed to have another animal as long as they live !!!
I would keep the puppy very confined, don't let it around many other dogs or in many places until it has been vaccinated. Has it been wormed before? We usually worm our pups at 2,4, 6 and 8 weeks old. Does he have a big pot-belly appearance? If so, I would go ahead and worm him. Most of the time, pups are vaccinated at 6 and 8 weeks, especially if they aren't with momma anymore.
Keep him on a good food and usually by the 6th week or so you shouldn't have to wet it down anymore.
We start potty training our pups at this age so you can take him outside to do his business if you want also.
Basically, just keep him warm, fed and confined. If he acts off in any way I would get him to the vet asap as pups can pick up just about anything.
