my boxer gave birth 4 days ago. she is not eating like normal and is what i say is too weak. she is drinking. I am really worried. she went into labor Wednesday afternoon. she didn't deliver her first pup until 6:00 a.m. on Thursday and her last about 9:30 p.m. that evening. very long labor. Does anyone have a clue. what can i give her to help her gain her strength?
If she won't eat even enticing food like canned or raw meat, you have a problem. She could have retained a puppy or placenta that is now giving her a raging infection. If that is the case she needs to see a vet or she could die.
Sometimes there isn't a "clear reason" but they go downhill and need to have an antibiotic to get them out of it.
How are her nipples? Are any swollen and rock hard? Boxers also get mastitis frequently and that can make them sick so they don't want to eat.
You should also try some of those high sugar/calorie products like Dyne or nutri-cal. Good luck.

take her temp. If over 101 she has an infection from something. If no infection and she just seems tired ( who wouldn't be after a labor like that!) try giving her this formula- 2 cups of milk, 4 egg yolks, 3 tablespoons mayonaise, and a "glug" of corn syrup. Preferably goats milk... I breed Saints and know they can have long labors and be off food for a day or two after. Is this her first litter? If not, how does she compare as far as last time? But if she has a temp or acts so sick she won't care for the pups i would definitely get her to the vet asap. Better a vet bill and healthy mommy than no girl and a litter of pups to bottle feed! Best wishes! Keep us posted!
