Having a hard time getting my yorkie (3 lbs.)to stay potty pad compliant. Will use the pad one time, then decides to pee or poo on the carpet the next time. I keep the pad changed and clean. I want to travel with her, but she can't be trusted. Any thoughts?
This seems to be a common issue when using potty pads. It is also why I never recommend their use in potty training. Is there a specific reason why she cannot be trained to go outside ? Is it because of her size? If you insist upon having her go indoors instead of out, and some people who live in apartment buildings do, then you might want to try a doggie litterbox system instead.
If the doggie litter box system doesn't appeal to you then I would limit her free range space in your home. I would get an x-pen, place the potty pad in the X-pen with her, and retrain her to use it. Was she crate trained originally? I think I would crate train her and have the X-pen with the potty pad set up so when you release her from the crate, you take her directly to the X-pen/potty pad as if you were walking her to potty outdoors and let her go in there. Kind of using the theory behind crate training but modifying it to suit your needs.
Having never trained a dog with potty pads I don't know if it would work but that is what I think I would do if I had to. good luck.
