Hi everyone! Glad to be on the site Well, I have a 7 year old male Yorkie who is incessantly licking his paws. He seems to get into a zone and will not listen to me when I repeatedly tell him to quit. He will literally lick his paws for hours on end. Any suggestions as to the cause?
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. There may have been a reason for him to originally start, like and itch or something and in some dogs that one thing can turn into an obsessive behavior.
You can put an Elizabethan collar around his head to prevent him from doing it and after a certain period of time it may be enough to break him of the habit. Or you can wrap the foot in a baby sock with tape at the top to keep it on. If you do the sock idea you MUST make sure the sock gets neither WET or DIRTY. If it does you must remove it immediately and change it. If you don't you will set him up to get a bacterial infection.
