What would be a good way to start my filly and gelding on barrels and poles. My filly just came off the track and I want to give her a new career. She is such a sweartheart and so gentle.I am very lucky with her and my gelding.
the bigger problem is teaching her to turn to the right. Race horses have a problem with that, as a track always goes to the left. I would start with lounging her, and working on her balence and flexation. Start on simple movements that loosen up the muscles in the neck, shoulders, and back. Figure 8's are good for that. Working at the trot is an excellent workout. Don't go to fast or to tight right away. Start with a nice working trot and a large circle. Work your way tighter and tigher. Work with a nice easy canter in very large circle. As everything loosens up, in time the horse will be able to work out really well. Esp. if they had the speed on the track.
Remember doing things to fast can make the horse trip, or fall off balence. This to them is frightening, and you could loose your horses trust and respect. Take your time work on alot of dry footing, and pay attention to your horses needs. if things are getting a little crazy, slow down and start again.
