My ten month old Shih Tzu had diarrhea two and a half weeks ago and as the night went on there was blood in her stool. I took her to the vet who put her on Metronidazole 175mg 1 time a day and it stopped. After four days it started again. We went back to the vet and she was put back on the medication. After four days it started again and was put back on the medication again along with chicken and rice...and yes, it's four days later and it's starting again. She is still on chicken and rice. I had full bloodwork done on her and it's fine. Any advice?
was she wormed with a good wormer since this has started?? metro is for giardia, could be she has coccidia which needs to be treated with albon or sulfa drug and also a broad spectrum wormer like safe-guard, i am not giving a diagnosis but it sounds to me like the vet did not do a complete check up on a stool sample. did you take a stool sample in, i would seek a second opinion from another vet. even if a stool sample was negative does not means there are NOT intestinal parasites present and should be wormed anyway.
Cocci pro here, I have it bad! This pup is a bit old for Cocci, most puppies immunity systems are mature at 12 weeks and cocci isn't much of a problem. That being said, however, doesn't mean this pup has enough immunity to fight off the cocci. I would ask the vet for a full stool workup, Dogs do get Cushings and other things that can cause this, food allergies are very common reasons for digestive upsets that don't resolve easily, Good luck, this is frustrating, I know
