i am looking for a shihpoo puppy and can only find them through pet stores or breeders that breed multiple breeds. i'm new to small dogs as i have always had large dogs and would have never purchased one from a kennel or pet store. are the "rules" different for small dogs.

Ok this time I know I won't be the rogue...Why in heavens name do you want a MUTT? These are not designer dogs, the term "designer dogs" came out about 10-15 years ago when someone had this bright idea to market their mutts to look more special or desireable
POOF! Let's pretend we did this on purpose and call them designer dogs...yeah that's the ticket and then the unsuspecting chumps will think there's something really unique and RARE about them.....
When you buy these so called rare designer dogs, you contribute more to the shelters because it encourages mixed breeding for no good reason. Either you like a Shih Tzu or you like a Poodle. Personally I'd go with the Poodle, My experiences with the Shih Tzu is that they have oilier skin and stink if you don't bathe them. Yeck...I hate them 2nd to Yorkies.
Exactly, shih-poo's are mutts, so rarely are you going to find a reputable breeder who has them. The so called "desinger dog" fad is what keeps puppy mills, and back yard breeder in buisness. Even though they are a mixed breed, it still doesn't mean they will be without their problems. Both breeds have a ton of health issues, and these places do not health test. So in the end you could get a dog riddled with health problems
There are so many wonderful small dogs out there. If you don't want a pure-breed, consider the shelter. Even the local paper, or breed rescues may have a nice dog that will fit your lifestyle. With the economy in the state it is in, I see alot of well loved young dogs that their owners have to give up for one reason or another.
