My family is thinking of getting a Chinese Crested hairless. My husband has always thought they looked cool. We think they might be a good choice because of my allergies. However, it's been 10 years since we've had an inside dog and before making a commitment, I've promised to read a lot and ask questions to find out if it's a good idea or not. I teach so I'm thinking of waiting till summer so I would have more time at home to train him. I'm looking for any advice, comments, or suggestions that anyone would like to share. Thanks!
Even though they don't have much hair, they are high maintance. They usually need sunscreen(pink skined most), and a shirt/sweater, and jacket. They get cold easily. I was told by a lady I show with, they tend to have a bit more of a terrier personality. They do get blackheads on their skin, no big deal. Find a reputable breeder, not a pet store or back yard breeder. do your research on genetic issues, and make sure your breeder tests for it. All puppies are cute, you want a well bred one that will be healthy.
A close friend of mine has two. Both have had to have teeth pulled and their tongues hang out. She oils their skin weekly as it will dry and crack. She bathes them twice a week as they sweat and then smell as there is no hair to absorb their oils or sweat.
Yes, they need sunscreen and are always cold, even in the summer, so they sleep on an electric mat they bought at a pet store. They are high maintenance dogs, very assertive, lap dogs who can be quite jealous. She is an at home mom and it works for her. There are hairy dogs that are low allergies also.
Glad you are doing your homework, as the dogs are an investment. I wish you the best.
