My lab mix, Boomer is adjusting well to his new home with us but i definitely think he has seperation anxiety. He hates it when we leave for work and is beyond excited when we come home! Any advice on toys or tips to stimulate him while we are gone? We don't want him to be unhappy through the day....
What makes you think he has SA? Most dogs don't like it when a pack member leaves, and is overjoyed when they return. It's what happens during the left-alone time that determines the pet's anxiety level.
Does your dog mess in his crate or in the house if left alone? Is he destructive, tearing up carpet, chewing on furniture, walls, whatever? Panting? Running in circles 'til exhausted? Drinking copious amounts of water? Refusing distractions?
If he doesn't have SA (google it for more information regarding how you determine if he has it), there is plenty of stuff out there to keep him entertained when you're gone...look up "dog interactive toys."
Here's hoping he's not truly SA. Believe me, I have an SA dog, and hating when I left and loving when I came back doesn't begin to describe his anxiety. It takes a lot of time, patience and love to help an SA dog. Best of luck.
Thank you so much for the feedback. Maybe he doesn't have SA because the only thing he has chewed up were a couple of pillows but we left them out where he could get them! He has only had 1 accident in the house and he went as close to the back door as he could get so i took it as he tried his best to get outside! i will check on toys to stimulate him but appreciate you sharing your experience!
