I have a 12 year old shih tzu. He was diagnosed with demodex mange (mite)a month ago. The vet prescribed 3ml of ivermectin for the first 2 weeks. During that time, shih tzu displayed loss of appetite & letargic. After the 2 weeks we took him back to the vet for skin scraping and and to go on another 2 weeks of ivermectin. However after the fourth week, shih tzu seems to be stumbling and seem to have lost a lot of weight. I blame the vet. We stopped giving him ivermectin for 2 days already. But he is still lethargic and unstable. Will my shih tzu recover if i stop giving him ivermectin? I rather live with shih tzu with mites than killing him due to a bad vet .
What is the strength of the Ivermectin? Is it the 1% formula? If so that is hugely overdosing a small dog. Though it could be a different strength, but yes it sounds like your dog is being overdosed.
I about killed a litter of 6 week old puppies giving them too much ivermectin. Several about went in to comas. Stumbling around. Good news was, since it was only one dose, they came out of it in about 24-36 hours and suffered no permanent damage.
