My poor shih tzu is suffering from side effects of ivermectin after 4 weeeks on it. (My shih Tzu has mites) The vet had prescribed 3ml for my 9kg shih Tzu. As i was away from home, my parents helped to administer the drug.
This week I came back to a wobbly shih tzu. He lost weight,no appetite, he's stumbling and seems unstable. We decided to stop giving him ivermectin due to concerns about his condition.
Will my shih tzu get better after some time off ivermectin? I am concern about adverse irreversible side effects.
The vet we went to did not even advise/warn us about the side effects. He didn't even check for sensitivity to the drug when i took my baby there. I am so angry.
I'm thinking what deputy is thinking. I wouldn't be mad at the vet for prescribing Ivermectin but disappointed in making sure you knew how to dose it out correctly. Ivermectin is typically a safe drug used in moderation. There are some breeds affected with a gene referred to as MDR1, collies, shelties and some others and Shih Tzu's are not one of the suspect breeds to be affected so it is perfectly forseeable a vet prescribing it to a shih tzu for mites. I doubt your shih tzu has ivermectin sensitivity, he's just terribly overdosed that was caused by a failure communication between you and the vet.
Ivermectin dosage for dogs is. One tenth of one CC per ten pounds of body weight. This Shin Tzu was severely overdosed. This little guy should have had no more than one tenth of one CC. 3 ml. is three CC's...enough for a Shetland Pony. Yikes.....
