So I was supposed to adopt a Toy Australian Shepherd when the owner backed out. I moved on to looking at shelters, hoping to adopt a dog in need of help. Lo and behold; I found one!
She's 1 1/2 years old and weighs a little over 8 pounds. Her name is Missy. Missy's owner decided she didn't want her anymore, and gave her to a high kill shelter. She also had Missy's tail docked earlier in life? It makes no sense to me but alright.. Missy was about to be put down when luckily her foster mom rescued her! I've talked to the mother, and Missy seems like such a sweet girl! She's a runner, holding true to her Sheltie breed so luckily we have a big fenced in yard. She's terrified of big dogs. I asked the Foster Mom what toys I should get Missy, and the Mother said she's not to big on toys; that she'd much rather lay in my lap.
I've grown up with a Border Collie from my shelter before, and I've grown up with dogs we found on the road that no one would claim. But being 18, this is my first serious dog I can call MY OWN.
Is there anything I should expect when adopting a dog with this history and what can I do to help her feel welcome in my home?
