my dog is 60 days pregnant and her temperature has been fluctuating since this mornings reading of 98.6 the lowest reading was 98.2 now her temp is back up to 99.9 I started taking her temperature on day 56 and it was steady at around 100.4-100.8 and daily it has dropped slowly I spoke to her vet a few days ago and he stated within a few days she should whelp. My question is since it went down so much is it about time? since it is sunday I cant get ahold of anyone. The other thing is she is showing no signs of distress or any signs of starting labor she has had alot of clear discharge that almost looks like snot(only way I could explain it sorry).what should I be looking for and could this be a false alarm.PLEASE I do not need to be lectured just would like to know. Ive done all the research but I am stumped with all the articles I have read most say she should be showing signs that she is getting ready to whelp within 24 hours of the temperature drop.We have everything ready for her and the pups. If anyone could help me or give me an Idea I would greatly appreciate it thanks!
Clear mucuey discharge is normal befor welping. It is simular to mucus plug that we loose before delivery.time before varies but mine has had discharge that i noticed any where from a few hours to 2 days before welping.Signs i look for is scratching at bedding, panting abnormally, sweating, and wanting to go out freq,Always take her out on leash (I carry a towel just in case)I dont know why but they seem to not want to have the first in the house if they can help it.
Mine tend to have their pups within a 24hr time period after the temp drops and stays down. I would say she is going to have them soon. alot of panting, nesting, and clinging to you are major signs for me.
thanks for the information took her temp this morning and its 99.0 still losing alot of mucus especially after she uses the bathroom. called her vet and he said all sounds normal just to keep monitoring her. but no puppies yet she started to dig in her whelping box lastnight so every few hours I was up checking on her she doesnt seem to be eating as much just nibbling around but has been laying around all morning keeping my fingers crossed hopefully soon well see her beautiful bundle were expecting 8 from what the vet could see!
VERY IMPORTANT!!!!! give her a TUMS, yes the antacid tablets for heartburn it is high in the correct type of calcium she needs to prevent milk fever. Give her one every day for 2 weeks or so.
Yes the nesting behavior and panting signals labor, this can last up to 12 hours in a first time mom. A lot of bitches refuse food the day of delivery, but not all of them. Ditto on the leash, mine tried to crawl under the porch to have them! Good luck and have fun!
Update:still nothing she has been in her welping box all day hasnt eaten anything since this morning she does take the occasional drink of water but not much. last temp reading was 99.9 so shes got me baffled she has been nesting off and on and sleeping heavy to the point shes been snoring.Once in a great while shell turn to check herself. From what I read her temp drop should stay down but hers seems to be fluctuating her lowest was yesterday morning at 98.6 but hasnt gone higher than 99.9 so Im starting to wonder if the temp. thing is going to work with her. Ive called the vet but he just tells me everything sounds about right and just gives me an over view of the warning signs on when to bring her in if any complications arise Im sure I have been driving him crazy or maybe I just have puppy fever who knows but I just want to be there for her when the time is right.I have been researching everything but cant find anything about the temp going up and down and what it means I thank everyone for their input just confused because she is not going by the text book descriptions I know all dogs are diffrent but the books dont tell you about this kind of situation.
I don't rely on temperature at all...other than just a guideline, but I would have dogs do exactly what your girl is doing all the time. It is very frustrating. Mine would bounce around from as low as 96-97 and back up to 98-99 for days and days.
Thing that MOST dogs do is quit eating for a couple days, and final stages are severely nesting, like you have to drag them off the bed... and finally evacuating their system. Have a very final nasty poo where they are straining. They may also pee 5 or more times in very tiny amounts.....THEN you are going to have puppies--for sure very soon.
Mine almost never ever go early. In fact most of my dogs go exactly on time to very late past their due date.
I am sure your dog will be fine. I have been raising dogs for 14 years and never lost a momma due to the birth process. (knock on wood)
