My much loved boo boo King has been having problems the last few months. It is a lump in his neck that we have been treating. The first few times it would go away and come back with anti-biotics. Now for the past 6 weeks or so it is there full time, getting larger and larger.
I took him to several vets and had full blood work-ups completed. Good news was everything else is great. No cancers or lymphomas detected. They then did a biopsy on the mass.
IT IS INDEED JUST A SALIVARY GLAND. It either became clogged, which can happen spontaneously (for no reason), or he could have injured it with chewing or getting something jammed in his mouth. He does chew on sticks and real cow bones, so this may have been the cause.
Since the mass is near his jugular vein and esophagus, a normal vet can not do his surgery. I called MSU, Purdue, and a private vet specialist group. I took him for a consultation and Thursday he gets the surgery.
He has a 95% chance of making a full recovery. It is just one of those unexpected things that can happen. I have been raising dogs for almost 15 years and this is the first time I have had to deal with something like this.
I will keep everyone posted. Please keep my baby in your thoughts. He is truly the best dog in every way. I think he was human in a past life. I will be nervous until this is over and he is back in my living-room where he belongs.
